The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for fog across Merseyside, in force from 6pm on Sunday, November 8, until 11am on Monday, November 9. Fog patches are expected to form during Sunday evening and overnight, becoming more widespread by Monday morning, with visibility potentially falling to around 50 metres or less in some areas.
Motorists could face difficult driving conditions, with longer journey times expected. There is also the possibility of delays to bus and train services, as well as disruption to flights. The Met Office said the fog is expected to thin slowly during Monday morning, although conditions could vary across the region.
Advice for drivers
Drivers are being advised to allow extra time for journeys, check road conditions before setting off and make sure they know how to operate their vehicle's fog lights. The Highway Code advises motorists to take extra care when driving in fog.
Eight safety steps from the Highway Code
Drivers should slow down and leave plenty of space between their vehicle and the one in front. They should use dipped headlights when visibility is reduced, and fog lights when visibility falls below 100 metres, switching them off when visibility improves.
Full-beam headlights should be avoided, as the light can reflect off the fog and make visibility worse. Windscreens and windows should be kept clear, with wipers used where necessary, and sudden braking and manoeuvres should be avoided. If visibility becomes too poor to continue safely, drivers should pull over somewhere safe and legal until conditions improve.
The Met Office is advising people to keep up to date with the latest forecast and travel information as conditions develop.
