Map shows where thick fog will be hazardous for millions of drivers
Map reveals where thick fog will hit drivers this week

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning as dense fog continues to linger across central and southern England, creating hazardous conditions for drivers and potentially disrupting road and rail travel and leading to flight cancellations.

The warning is active until 10am and covers swathes of the South East surrounding London, the East of England, the East Midlands and parts of the West Midlands.

Where fog is expected

Most people in southern and central England enjoyed mild weather and clear skies earlier in the week, but since Thursday night, mist and fog has been creeping in during the mornings. Some of the most persistent fog might not clear until the afternoon, the forecaster warned.

The Met Office said: 'Fog, dense in places with visibility below 100 metres at times, will slowly begin to thin, lift and clear later this morning or, in some rural spots in eastern England, not until this afternoon. The most extensive and disruptive fog will be during the morning rush hour.'

Outlook and driving advice

Tomorrow, some rain is forecast in northern and western parts of the British Isles, while large parts of the UK are set to be dry and settled. However, there is a risk of night-time fog in parts of eastern and southern England, and the conditions could return early next week.

Fog, which is most common from October until March, can hamper visibility on the road. Particularly dense fog can reduce visibility to just a couple of feet ahead.

The motoring expert AA has shared tips for driving safely in foggy conditions: opt for dipped headlights, wipers and demisters; pop fog lights on when needed but switch them off again when visibility improves; beware of other drivers not having the appropriate headlights on; adjust speed depending on conditions; slow down to allow more time to stop; allow three seconds instead of two between you and the car in front; and at junctions where visibility is poor, open your window and listen for traffic.
