Met Office Warns of Very High UV in Four UK Areas

The Met Office has issued a warning for 'very high' UV levels in four areas of the UK as the third heatwave of the year sweeps the country. A new map shows that South-west England, South-east England, East England, and Wales are expected to experience UV index 10 on Wednesday, indicating a very high risk of harm from unprotected sun exposure. At this level, UV rays can damage unprotected skin and eyes in as little as 15 minutes.

Met Office Advice for Sun Safety

In a post on X, the Met Office urged: 'Take care in the sunshine tomorrow; UV levels will be high to very high for most.' The agency advises minimising outdoor activities between 10am and 4pm, seeking shade, wearing protective clothing, and applying sun cream. The forecast for Wednesday also predicts 'plenty of sunshine' and 'very warm' conditions across southern and central England, with temperatures climbing into the low 30s°C.

Third Heatwave of the Year

Temperatures are expected to reach 34°C to 35°C in some parts of southern England later this week. Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster Steven Keates commented: 'Night-time temperatures again will not be as high as what we experienced in June, though some larger urban areas are likely to remain in the high teens Celsius overnight, especially later in the week, and there is a chance that a tropical night (where temperatures do not fall below 20°C) may be recorded in a few places.' He added: 'Much of England and Wales will be hot, and the heat will extend to parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland too, though here peak temperatures are more likely to be in the upper 20s Celsius. With high UV and high temperatures, people should take the usual precautions with the heat and the sun.'
