The Met Office has issued a warning for people across the UK, including Merseyside, as temperatures drop slightly next week but UV levels remain high. Record-breaking temperatures have been felt across the UK throughout 2026, and the weather agency has said warm spells will continue in August.
UV Levels Remain High Despite Cooling Temperatures
On X, the Met Office stated: "Temperatures may be falling for many, but the sun's UV strength is not linked to the heat you feel. UV levels will remain high or very high in the coming days."
Yinka Ebo, Senior Health Information Officer at Cancer Research UK, said: "It's great to have such lovely weather, and we all need some sun to keep us healthy, but it's important to stay safe when the sun is strong and take care not to burn. In many cases sunburn actually happens in the UK, often when people are out and about. The sun's rays can be strong enough to burn in the UK from around April to September."
Sun Protection Advice
Ebo added: "You can protect yourself and your family from sunburn by using a combination of shade, clothing and at least SPF 15 sunscreen when enjoying the sunshine." A small amount of UV radiation is essential for vitamin D production, but too much exposure can have serious effects on skin and eyes. People should keep covered, wear a hat and sunglasses, spend time in the shade, and use a high factor sun cream with good UVA protection.
Risks of Overexposure
The Met Office highlighted the effects of overexposure to UV radiation: "Extreme sunburn can be very serious and all sunburn can cause serious ongoing health effects, however most people initially experience mild symptoms, such as hot red skin. Protecting yourself against sunburn is very important as excessive UV radiation directly damages the DNA in your skin cells. Often not all of the sun damage will be fully repaired by the body's defence system, so it will gradually cause skin ageing over the years and may lead to skin cancer."
Local Weather Forecast
In the BBC weather forecast for Liverpool, it said: "Tomorrow there will be a mixture of patchy cloud moving in from the north along with sunny spells. Small chance of a shower in the afternoon. Warm." For Tuesday to Thursday, the outlook added: "Tuesday will start with a few patches of cloud and sunny spells. Plenty of sunshine will develop through the morning, but patchy cloud could return in the afternoon. A dry, warm day. Wednesday will see cloudy periods and the odd light shower. Turning dry and sunny by the evening. Thursday will start dry and mostly sunny, but cloudier in the afternoon, with the odd shower."
