£1 Home Bargains vinegar hack for cleaning patios in autumn

Patios can accumulate dirt and grime during winter due to constant exposure to rain, wind, and seasonal changes, while moss can build up and create a slipping risk. A homemade mixture using a £1 bottle of white vinegar from Home Bargains, combined with warm water and washing-up liquid, cleans patio surfaces for roughly 50p per use.

The cleaning method

Every spring and autumn, the patio is tackled with this mixture. First, loose debris is swept away with a stiff-bristle brush. Then white vinegar and warm water are combined in a bucket at a 1:1 ratio, with the water warm but not scalding.

A small splash of washing-up liquid is added before spreading the mixture over the entire patio, focusing on stubborn marks. The solution is left to work for around one hour, though in milder weather the process can proceed more quickly.

Results and cost

After scrubbing with a brush, embedded stains are dislodged and lifted away. About half a bottle is used for an entire patio, bringing the cost to approximately 50p per clean, with the remaining vinegar available for laundry or other household chores. The technique requires very little scrubbing.

The solution can be reapplied if needed. It is essential to test a small area first, as some materials could be damaged by white vinegar.

Alternative methods

Patios can alternatively be cleaned with a pressure washer or a specialist patio-cleaning solution. Keeping patios clean and free of stains helps ensure their durability and reduces the risk of slips. Another method involves pouring cola directly onto patio stains, leaving it for 30 minutes, and rinsing with warm water.
