Mwnt, a sheltered cove in Ceredigion, Wales, has been named one of the best beaches in the UK, drawing increasing crowds. The beach features golden sand, crystal-clear waters, and occasional dolphin sightings, making it a popular destination despite its remote location.
Location and Access
Located about four and a half miles from Cardigan town centre, Mwnt is accessible via a steep set of steps from the car park. Parking costs £6 all day, with free parking for National Trust members and Blue Badge holders. The beach is dog-friendly from 1 October to 31 March, with assistant dogs allowed year-round.
Wildlife and Activities
Visitors may spot dolphins, seals, and various bird species, including European Stonechat, Red-billed Chough, and Meadow Pipit. During summer 2026, beach yoga is offered on Saturday mornings, followed by coffee and bacon rolls from Caban, the coffee cabin at the top of the steps. Caban also sells magnets, postcards, buckets, spades, cakes, ice creams, and hot chocolates.
Historical and Cultural Features
The beach is named after Foel y Mwnt, a conical hill offering panoramic views over Cardigan Bay. The Grade I listed Holy Cross Church, dating back to the 13th century, is a notable landmark. Two campsites overlook the beach: one previously featured in articles and the family-run Ty Gwyn, which offers static caravans, tent, and tourer pitches with or without electric hook-ups.
Visitor Tips
Toilets are available on site. The beach is best visited on a sunny summer day, but the water remains clear and blue even on calm days. For those unable to manage the steps, picnic benches near Caban provide a scenic alternative. The beach is included in several lists of Wales' best beaches, with over 40 recommended spots for 2026 and beyond.
