British travellers are being warned that a lack of blank pages in their passport could see them denied boarding, even if the document is still valid. While many are aware of the three‑month validity rule, fewer know that several countries require two to six blank visa or stamp pages.
Namibia demands the most, with six blank pages needed. Other countries requiring three or more include Botswana, Mozambique, Zambia, Brunei, South Africa, and Madagascar. For destinations such as The Bahamas, Cuba, China, Singapore, and India, two blank pages are necessary.
Travel influencers have shared their experiences of being caught out. One, @remoteroams, said on TikTok: “We were supposed to go to Cambodia today, but apparently George doesn’t have enough blank pages in his passport left.” Another, @Hales, had to visit the US Embassy in Ireland for an emergency passport after being warned she might not be able to continue her trip.
Experts recommend always travelling with at least two blank pages. A useful hack is to apply for a ‘large book’ passport, which has 54 pages instead of the standard 34. All British citizens are eligible for this jumbo passport.
However, the issue may become less common in Europe. The EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES), which replaces manual stamping with digital screening, began rolling out in October 2025 and is expected to be fully implemented across the 29 Schengen countries by April 2026.
