UK Motorists Urged Not to Drive Amid Red Heat Warning on Wednesday
UK Motorists Told Not to Drive on Wednesday Due to Red Heat Warning

The RAC has issued a 'do not drive' warning for Wednesday, urging UK motorists to avoid non-essential journeys as the Met Office's red weather warning takes effect. The warning covers areas including the West Midlands, East Midlands, South East, South West, London, and East of England.

Breakdowns Expected to Soar

Rod Dennis, road safety spokesperson at the RAC, said drivers whose vehicles lack effective air conditioning should strongly consider postponing non-essential trips. He warned that vehicles face a higher chance of breaking down due to the heat, with breakdown volumes expected to be around 20% higher than normal for a Monday in late June.

The RAC also urged patience as wait times for roadside assistance are expected to increase significantly. Dennis noted that the last busiest June for the RAC was three years ago, but that record could be eclipsed this week as temperatures soar.

Red Weather and Health Warnings

The Met Office's red weather warnings are in effect for Wednesday and Thursday, with a red health warning also issued by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). Dennis described these warnings as 'rare' and urged everyone to take them seriously.

For those who must travel, the RAC advises doing so during cooler times of day. The AA added that gritters could be seen on some roads this week due to the potential for surfaces to soften or become sticky under the heat, with heavy traffic causing ruts in some places.

Public Transport Disruption

Off the roads, public transport and train lines are also expected to face chaos, with services disrupted and reduced schedules. The heatwave is set to bring record-breaking temperatures for June, which will likely trigger a record number of breakdown call-outs.
