Subarashii, a Japanese sushi and Asian-style restaurant in Urmston town centre, has impressed a local reviewer with its fresh sushi and generous portions, particularly the All Salmon Set, which arrived with 21 pieces despite being advertised as 20.
The restaurant, located at 15-17 Crofts Bank Rd, occupies the former site of Delmar Lounge Bar and, before that, Los Vinos. The Japanese word "Subarashii" translates roughly to wonderful, splendid or magnificent, setting high expectations for diners.
Atmosphere and service
Upon entering, diners are greeted by walls covered in murals paying homage to Asian culture, creating an immersive atmosphere. The staff were described as kind, friendly, and incredibly attentive. During a mid-week visit, the restaurant was quiet with only three other tables occupied, which the reviewer noted contrasted with the busier weekend buzz. The quieter atmosphere resulted in quick service, with staff available to explain menu options and offer recommendations.
Starters and mains
The meal began with Japanese Furikake Fries, which offered a mix of sweet and savoury flavours but did not "rock our world." The Duck Spring Rolls, served as four pieces, were tasty and not too greasy, with succulent duck. The Chicken Katsu Boa Buns featured fluffy buns and crispy chicken with a substantial filling of vegetables and sauce.
The main event, the All Salmon Set, was described as the "real star of the show." This sharing platter included five Salmon and Avocado rolls, eight Salmon Makis, four pieces of Salmon Nigiri, and four pieces of Salmon Sashimi. Priced at £26.50, the reviewer felt it was "a bit of a steal" given the quality of every component.
Presentation and quality
The sushi was presented in the shape of a flower, with additional flowers decorating the board, impressing the reviewer from the moment it arrived. The set came with cucumber, carrots, wasabi, and ginger. The salmon maki, arranged to create petals, were delicious. The sashimi and nigiri were both praised for the quality of the salmon, with the sticky rice soft enough to melt in the mouth but not so soft that it fell apart.
The standout piece was the Salmon and Avocado rolls, elevated by sriracha mayo and tobiko, though one dining companion found them possibly a bit too sweet. Despite minor issues, which the reviewer admitted were their own fault for over-ordering, the fresh sushi "truly blew us away." The review concludes that Subarashii is a welcome addition to Urmston's growing food scene, offering plenty of variety alongside genuinely incredible dishes.
