7 Beautiful Turkey Destinations Where You Can Escape the Crowds

Turkey is famed for its bustling tourist hotspots like Istanbul, Bodrum, and Cappadocia, but beyond these well-trodden paths lies a wealth of lesser-known destinations offering culture, diverse landscapes, and tranquillity. The Türkiye Tourism Promotion and Development Agency (TGA) is actively encouraging travellers to explore the country's 81 provinces, aiming to distribute the economic benefits of tourism more evenly.

Ismail Bütün, general manager of TGA, notes that with 60 million tourists projected to visit in 2024, popular spots should “share the love” with quieter areas. Even near major resorts, hidden gems await: Köprülü Kanyon National Park, an adventure hub with rafting and zip-lining, is just an hour from Antalya, while the laid-back beach town Akyaka is 30 minutes from Marmaris.

The Black Sea region offers a rugged alternative to the crowded Turkish Riviera, with sleepy fishing villages, rolling hills, and ancient fortifications. Highlights include Atakum Beach—the longest on the Black Sea coast—and the 4th-century Sümela Monastery, perched 1,200 metres high.

For winter sports, Turkey provides uncrowded slopes at affordable prices. Day ski passes cost under £20, and lunch can be had for a tenner. Erciyes, the largest ski resort, boasts 150km of pistes, while Uludağ, 200km from Istanbul, offers easy access from the city.

Island lovers can head to Bozcaada in the Aegean Sea, where golden beaches meet small hotels and laid-back cafes. The island’s Greek influences are evident in its Mediterranean cuisine and colourful tavernas, while centuries-old vineyards and a rich history—from Phoenician to Ottoman rule—add to its charm.
