Spain's Minister of the Interior has issued a new safety alert as July begins, with millions of journeys set to commence over the forthcoming weeks. In a fresh advisory on X, formerly Twitter, the minister called on people making such journeys to follow four key steps: no rushing, no distractions, take breaks every so often, and arrive safely.
Minister's Warning on Social Media
The message, translated from Spanish, reads: 'July 1st: many begin their vacations. Caution while driving. No rushing. No distractions. Breaks every so often. May arriving safely be what's important.' The post was accompanied by a graphic emphasizing these points.
Spain Remains Top Destination for Britons
Spain remains the top choice for Britons travelling overseas, with numerous visitors opting to rent vehicles and explore the country by road while there. This is in addition to Spanish residents embarking on domestic breaks. The warning comes as holiday traffic peaks across the country.
Specific Beach Regulations and Fines
The warning follows concerns for Spain holidaymakers in particular locations who face regulations that could land them with huge fines. For example, fines reaching as much as 3,000 euros are now in force for beach visitors playing ball games beyond designated zones in certain areas of Spain. Tourists may be unaware of these restrictions, especially as there is no countrywide prohibition applying to all Spanish beaches. Individual councils control such matters via local bylaws; therefore, an activity allowed on one municipality's beach might be banned in another. It is consequently vital to check any rules in the locations you visit – being unfamiliar with the rules for a particular beach does not excuse you from adhering to them, even if you are not a resident of the region.
