RAC Reveals 2 Essential Steps to Cool Down Your Car Faster in UK Heatwave
RAC: 2 Steps to Cool Down Your Car Faster in UK Heatwave

The RAC has advised motorists on two essential steps to rapidly cool down a car that has become too hot during the current UK heatwave. The advice comes as temperatures are expected to reach up to 40 degrees Celsius in some areas this week.

Step 1: Fan the Interior

According to the RAC, the first step is to open both windows on one side of the car and then swing a door on the opposite side back and forth several times. This action helps push the hot air out of the vehicle, making the interior more bearable before starting the engine.

Step 2: Start the Engine and Use Air Conditioning

Although it may seem counterproductive, the RAC advises starting the engine to turn on the air conditioning. Set it to the coldest setting and ensure it draws air from outside, not recirculated air, as the external air will be cooler at this point. Once the air feels cool, close all windows and switch to recirculated air to keep the cold air inside. This method is also more efficient.

An RAC expert explained: "Getting into a car that's been parked all day? Here's the quickest way to cool it down."

Additional Tips from the RAC

The RAC also recommends parking in the shade whenever possible to prevent direct sunlight from heating the cabin. If shade is not available, angle the car so the windshield faces away from the sun during peak hours. Installing a reflective windshield sunshade can also block solar radiation and lower dashboard and steering wheel temperatures.

One commenter noted: "The worst part isn’t the drive… it’s touching the steering wheel after it’s been sat in the sun." Another joked: "I tried that door swingy thing in my driveway this morning, my neighbour looked at me and rolled his eyes!" Some drivers without air conditioning expressed frustration, with one saying it "must be nice" to have that feature.
