The Met Office has pinpointed 19 areas across the UK that will be hit by heavy rain on Friday, providing a temporary respite from the ongoing heatwave. While most of Britain continues to bask in hot weather, these locations are set to experience significant downpours, with some areas seeing rain as early as 4am.
Areas Affected by Heavy Rain on Friday
According to the Met Office's latest weather maps, the rain will begin in the early hours of Friday, June 26. In England, cities such as Manchester, Preston, Sheffield, Birmingham, Leicester, Huddersfield, and Stoke-on-Trent are expected to receive rainfall from 4am. Later, by 6am, the rain will move north, affecting Leeds, York, Lincoln, and Newcastle. By 7am, it will reach the east coast, including Hull and Boston.
In Wales, Wrexham and Swansea are also likely to see downpours. Scotland will experience heavy rain across large parts of the north and central regions, including Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Fort William, and most of the Highlands.
Forecast Details and Weekend Outlook
The Met Office's forecast for Friday states: "Another hot day in the east on Friday. Fresher conditions gradually arriving from the west into the weekend, but this accompanied by spells of rain and thundery showers." Looking ahead to the weekend, the forecaster warns that more rain could arrive from Sunday onwards.
In its long-range forecast covering June 28 to July 7, the Met Office adds: "Fairly changeable conditions at first with periods of rain and showers, and there could be some thundery outbreaks at times. Perhaps a drier start to July for many, although the northwest may still see some rain at times, and perhaps accompanied by some strong winds. Temperatures remain widely above average, and there remains a chance of some very warm or hot weather returning, mainly across the south."
Impact of the Rain
The heavy rain will provide a brief break from the heatwave for the affected areas, though temperatures are expected to remain above average in the following days. The Met Office has not issued any warnings for the rain, but residents in the listed areas should prepare for potential disruptions, including localized flooding and travel delays.
