Consumer group Which? has released its annual survey of the UK's best and worst seaside destinations, based on more than 5,300 responses from visitors over the past year. Among the lowest-rated destinations are New Brighton and Southport in Merseyside, alongside Blackpool, Southend-on-Sea, Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft, Bangor, Fleetwood and Burnham-on-Sea. Bognor Regis finished last overall with a destination score of just 41%.
North East tops the list
Rory Boland, editor of Which? Travel, commented: "The North East has emerged as this year's favourite seaside spot, a reflection of its outstanding beaches and the fact that holidays here can be fantastic value for money." He added that there are "special seaside towns in every corner of the UK" and recommended lesser-known destinations such as Swanage, Plockton, Southwold and Conwy for a great time and potential savings.
Survey methodology
The survey asked respondents to rate their seaside visits on factors including beach quality, seafront, attractions, peace and quiet, and value for money. Scores were aggregated to produce an overall destination score for each location. The full list of best and worst destinations is available on the Which? website.
