British tourists planning an Italian getaway are being urged to double-check their accommodation after reports emerged of a shocking hotel scam in the historic city of Palermo, Sicily.
The Prison That Pretends to Be a Hotel
Unsuspecting travellers searching for budget accommodation have reportedly been duped into booking rooms at what appears to be a former prison – complete with iron-barred windows, shared bathrooms and an enforced 10pm curfew.
One horrified guest described their experience: "We arrived expecting a charming Italian pensione, but found ourselves in what looked like a detention centre. The 'staff' wore uniforms, our doors locked from the outside at night, and we had to ask permission to leave the building."
How the Scam Works
The scheme operates through several popular booking platforms, using:
- Stolen photographs from legitimate hotels
- Fake five-star reviews
- Unusually low prices to lure budget-conscious travellers
Authorities believe the operation may be run by organised crime groups capitalising on Sicily's popularity with British tourists.
How to Protect Yourself
Travel experts recommend:
- Always check multiple review sites before booking
- Reverse image search hotel photos to verify authenticity
- Be wary of prices that seem too good to be true
- Contact the hotel directly through their official website
The Italian tourist board has promised to crack down on the scam, but warn visitors to remain vigilant when booking accommodation in Sicily and other popular destinations.
