Readers' Favourite Cooler European Coastal Escapes Without the Heat
Cooler European Coastal Escapes: Readers' Favourite Spots

Readers have shared their favourite cooler European coastal destinations, offering alternatives to the scorching heat of southern Europe. From the Baltic shores of Latvia and Finland to the Atlantic coasts of Ireland and Norway, these spots provide refreshing escapes with mild temperatures and stunning scenery.

Latvia's Forested Beaches

Bruce recommends Saulkrasti, just an hour from Riga by train. The long sandy beaches are backed by scented pine forests, with a well-marked 4km trail from the station to Balta Kapa's big dune and blue river. "We enjoyed a July picnic in the forest and occasional dips in the Mediterranean-warm Baltic," he says.

Brittany's Cool Sands

Gaia praises Dinard on Brittany's Côte Emeraude, where August temperatures stayed in the low twenties. "It was the perfect starting place for day trips," she notes, highlighting family-friendly beaches, crepes, cidre, and street parties. St Malo is easily accessible by train from Paris.

Finnish Beach with Sauna and Volleyball

Pete discovered Yyteri beach in southwest Finland while cycling. The 3km-long sands were uncrowded, and he joined a local beach volleyball team, later enjoying a sardine, song, and sauna evening. "Impromptu swim and song parties start at midnight as the sun sets – don't be afraid of joining in!" he advises.

Norway's Far North-East

Natalie Keene spent a week in Varangerfjord, north-east Norway, taking a boat trip to Hornøya island (£95 per person with Explore 70 Degrees or Skua Nature). She also visited the abandoned fishing village of Hamningberg, untouched by German troops in 1945, and the Steilneset Memorial, which commemorates 91 people burned as witches in 1621.

Poland's Family-Friendly Coast

Kate enjoyed a week in Sopot, Poland, with her children. The fine white sand beaches are a 20-minute train ride from Gdansk. Highlights include the longest wooden pier in Europe at 511.5 metres and pierogi on Monte Cassino Street. "The Baltic Sea was a bit 'refreshing', but it was a small price to pay for such a fun beach break," she says.

Ireland's Spectacular Donegal Shores

Brendan recommends the Fanad peninsula in Donegal, where his father grew up. Rathmullan and Ballymastocker beaches offer long strands of pale sand, with spectacular vistas as Lough Swilly meets the Atlantic. Visit Fanad Head lighthouse and the peaceful Atlantic beaches of Ballyhiernan.

Iceland's Geothermal Joys

Hannah Angle found Akureyri in northern Iceland to be good value. Staying at Saeluhus hotel, she enjoyed views of Eyjafjörður fjord, teeming with whales in summer. City buses are free. The Forest Lagoon offers a peaceful alternative to the Blue Lagoon, and the municipal geothermal pool is even cheaper.

Rainy Bliss in Northern Spain

Eve followed a workmate's tip to Gijón on Spain's north coast, where it rained three of seven days in July. The Semana Negra literary festival provided indoor entertainment, including an interview with John Banville. "It never gets cold up there in July, but one day it reached 27C and some daytime events were cancelled due to 'extreme heat'," she notes.

Baltic Beauty in North Germany

Barbara Forbes recommends Greifswald, a Hanseatic town near the Baltic coast. The village of Wieck features a quiet beach, a modern flood barrier, and the ruins of 12th-century Eldena Abbey, painted by Caspar David Friedrich. From Greifswald, trains run to Stralsund and the island of Rügen.

Winning Tip: Swedish Sandhammaren

Nicholas describes Sandhammaren beach in southern Sweden as having soft white sand and clear aqua marine waters. "It made me feel as if I was on a Greek island – without the stifling heat," he says. The nature reserve behind the beach is home to elk and birds, and the 19th-century lighthouse offers guided tours. A kiosk sells snacks like sardine rye bread for under £5.
