Chorlton Ees Walk: Shaded Riverside Trails for Hot Summer Days

Chorlton Ees provides a cool retreat amid soaring temperatures

As Greater Manchester braces for another scorching week with temperatures reaching 28°C, Chorlton Ees nature reserve offers a shaded escape along the River Mersey. The 58-hectare site, located in South Manchester, features meadows and woodland criss-crossed with paths that provide ample coverage from the sun.

According to the Met Office, Monday will see highs of 26°C, followed by 27°C on Tuesday and 28°C on Wednesday and Thursday. Sunny conditions are expected throughout, though Tuesday may bring some clouds. Early morning or evening visits are recommended for cooler strolls.

Access and amenities at Chorlton Ees

The reserve can be accessed from Brookburn Road, where a small car park is available (postcode M21 9ES), just around the corner from Beech Road's bars and restaurants. It is also reachable via paths in Ivy Green, separated from the Ees by Chorlton Brook. Popular with dog walkers, runners, and cyclists, the network of trails winds through towering trees and open meadows.

In the coming weeks, hedgerows will be adorned with jewel-coloured blackberries as the season begins. The Ees connects to National Route 62, a 209-mile mostly traffic-free route from Fleetwood to Selby.

Routes along the River Mersey

Following paths south and south-west leads to the River Mersey. From there, walkers can head west to Sale Water Park or east to Chorlton Water Park for a longer excursion. The shaded trails make it an ideal destination during the heatwave, offering a natural canopy from the blazing sun.
