Bognor Regis Named Worst UK Seaside Town for Second Year, Council Hits Back
Bognor Regis Named Worst UK Seaside Town for Second Year

Bognor Regis in West Sussex has been ranked the UK's worst seaside town for the second year running in Which?'s annual survey, receiving a destination score of just 41%. The consumer champion surveyed over 5,300 people about 11,999 experiences at UK seaside towns, assessing criteria including beach quality, scenery, food and drink, accommodation, attractions, shopping, and value for money.

Survey Results and Visitor Feedback

Visitors described the town as "tired" and in need of "major rejuvenation," according to Which?. Bognor Regis received low ratings across all categories, including 2 stars for peace and quiet, and 1-star scores for seafront/pier, food and drink, tourist attractions, scenery, shopping, value for money, and beach. The destination score is based on overall satisfaction and likelihood of recommendation.

Council Response

Arun District Council hit back at the findings, stating that "a relatively small survey sample cannot capture the views of the many residents, visitors and businesses who know, support and value the town." The council highlighted Bognor Regis's strengths, including East Beach's Seaside Award flag for tidiness and safety, Green Flag award-winning Hotham Park, and the upcoming Alexandra Arts Centre regeneration.

"The Esplanade has also benefitted from a fresh new look, with improvements to the roadway and public realm," the council said. "The 'Beach on the Beach' and 'Play on the Beach' areas give children and families more opportunities to enjoy the seafront safely."

Investment and Attractions

The council noted ongoing investments, including a new 116-bedroom Premier Inn, a wayfinding scheme, and the Marine Quarter project celebrating the town's maritime heritage. Butlin's remains a major attraction, and the town is known as one of the sunniest places in the UK. The Bognor Regis Time Portal uses augmented reality to highlight local history, such as the story of Mary Wheatland.

"We’d encourage those surveyed to come back and spend a little more time here before making up their minds – they might be surprised by just how much Bognor Regis has to offer!" the council added.
