A tropical storm that was formerly Typhoon Jangmi has injured nine people and caused power outages for tens of thousands of homes across southwestern Japan. Nearly 400,000 residents, including the entire population of Miyazaki city on Kyushu island, have been urged to evacuate as the storm approaches.

The storm battered Okinawa before moving north towards Kyushu, bringing violent winds, high waves, landslides, and flooding risks. Forecasters warn of heavy rainfall, potentially reaching 200 to 300 millimetres in affected regions. Public transport disruptions are expected in Tokyo as the storm moves northward.
Transport and Power Disruptions
Japan's two largest airlines have cancelled a combined 600 flights between Monday and Wednesday, with further disruptions expected for routes serving Kyushu and Shikoku. Tens of thousands of homes are without power, and authorities have warned of further outages as the storm continues.
Residents in affected areas are advised to stay indoors, avoid coastal areas, and follow evacuation orders. The storm is expected to weaken as it moves over land, but the risk of flooding and landslides remains high.
