Matthew Perry Auction: Aniston Letter, Banksy, and Friends Scripts
Matthew Perry Auction: Aniston Letter, Banksy, Friends Scripts

Nearly three years after the death of Matthew Perry, fans have the opportunity to own a piece of his legacy through a charity auction of his personal belongings. Signed Friends scripts, a handwritten letter from Jennifer Aniston, an original Banksy, and a worn leather wallet containing the actor's AmEx and SAG-AFTRA membership card are among the items for sale.

Auction Details and Beneficiary

The auction, conducted by Heritage Auctions on Friday, 5 June 2026, will benefit the Matthew Perry Foundation. This nonprofit organization, established in his name, supports individuals living with addiction—a cause deeply close to Perry's heart. He dedicated much of his time and energy to this issue during his lifetime.

Perry was 54 years old when he was found dead in a hot tub at his Hollywood home in October 2023. His death was ruled an accident due to the acute effects of ketamine. A woman known as the "ketamine queen" was sentenced last month to 15 years in prison for providing the drugs.

Lisa Kasteler Calio, chief executive of the Matthew Perry Foundation, stated: "Matthew believed addiction should be met with compassion and science, not stigma and silence. This auction fuels the Foundation's work to expand access to evidence-based care and confront stigma. It is one more way we ensure that no one has to fight this disease alone."

Key Auction Items

Banksy's Girl with Balloon is expected to fetch the highest price, estimated at over $800,000. Other notable items include several artworks and scripts of Friends episodes, such as a signed copy of the 2004 finale, currently bid at $26,000 but expected to rise significantly.

Among the 130 lots of Perry's personal effects, several items carry particular emotional significance, reflecting his legacy as a comedian, his dramatic acting abilities, his love of music, and his cherished friendships.

Letter from Jennifer Aniston

Perhaps the most emotional item is a handwritten letter from his longtime co-star and friend Jennifer Aniston, addressed to "Matty!!!!!" In it, she writes: "Oh my… How am I going to live without your light in my life on a daily basis?" The letter acknowledges Perry's struggles: "I know that light has been dimmed at times and there were moments I was so scared it was going to go out all together. You have always come back. I so thank you for choosing to live this life." Alongside the letter is a typed poem about "keeping the faith" and "beginning again."

The Velveteen Rabbit

Perry owned a copy of Margery Williams' The Velveteen Rabbit, a children's tale about love, loss, and being "real." The book appeared in a season four episode of Friends when Chandler buys a first edition for Kathy. The lot also includes a raggedy stuffed rabbit from Perry's childhood.

The West Wing Tapes

Perry is best known for playing Chandler Bing on Friends, but his guest role on The West Wing showcased his dramatic talent. He played lawyer Joe Quincy in three episodes, earning two Emmy nominations. The cassettes of The West Wing on auction hint at a future that could have been.

Portraits of Matthew Perry

Several portraits of Perry are available, including an oil painting by an unknown American artist, a charcoal and graphite drawing, a framed black-and-white photograph, and a compilation of childhood photos. These images offer a more personal view of the actor, contrasting with paparazzi photos from his lows.

Friends Scripts

A script of the final episode, signed by Perry and his five co-stars, is a highly coveted item. Its current bid of $26,000 reflects the show's cultural impact. Perry once described Friends as "the best job in the entire world" and credited his co-stars as "penguins" who supported him during his addiction struggles.

Discman and Mix CDs

Perry's music collection offers insight into his personality. Homemade CDs titled "Matt's Mix" and "Serenade" include artists like LCD Soundsystem, Lykke Li, Barenaked Ladies, and U2. A birthday mix made by friends is also included.

Batman Memorabilia

Perry was an avid Batman fan, spending $20 million on a penthouse with a "bat cave." The auction includes Batman figurines, a themed ping pong table, comic books, a mug, and movie tickets. Perry once said he saw similarities between himself and Batman, calling himself a "rich loner" who saved lives through addiction recovery work. His last public words were "I'm Mattman."
