An 18-year-old kayaker died after being thrown into a river by a freak lightning strike in Florida. Michael Aidan Vargas was with his father on the Blackwater River in Santa Rosa County, approximately 170 miles west of Tallahassee, on Sunday when the tragedy occurred.
According to reports, Vargas and his father were enjoying a day on the water when a sudden lightning strike hit the area. The strike threw Vargas from his kayak into the river. His father and employees from the Navy's Morale, Welfare, and Recreation programme witnessed the incident but were unable to save him.
Emergency services were called to the scene, and Vargas's body was later recovered from the water. The incident is under investigation by local authorities.
The Blackwater River is a popular destination for kayaking and canoeing, known for its dark, tannic waters. Lightning strikes are rare but can be deadly, especially in open water where there is no shelter.
This tragic event serves as a reminder of the dangers of lightning during outdoor activities. The National Weather Service advises that if you hear thunder, you are within striking distance of lightning and should seek shelter immediately.
