Schools across the Chicago area and parts of the US Midwest are facing significant disruption this Monday, 10th November 2025, as an intense bout of winter weather sweeps across the region.
Widespread Disruption from Heavy Snow
The Chicago area and communities surrounding Lake Michigan are bracing for what forecasters have described as intense snowfall, with accumulations potentially reaching up to 18 inches. This is coupled with strong winds of around 30mph, creating dangerous blizzard-like conditions. The severe weather has forced many school districts to take immediate action, resulting in either full closures, delayed start times, or a switch to e-learning to ensure student safety.
Winter Storm Warnings and Hazardous Travel
The disruptive weather extends beyond Illinois. Official winter storm warnings are currently in place for the states of Michigan, Indiana, and Wisconsin, where up to 12 inches of snow is expected. The combination of heavy snow and high winds is leading to hazardous travel conditions and significantly reduced visibility on the roads. Further west, portions of Minnesota, Nebraska, and South Dakota are experiencing patchy blowing snow and wind chills near zero, following earlier snowfall in some areas.
Deep Freeze Grips the Southern States
While the Midwest deals with heavy snow, a separate cold snap is affecting a wide area of the Southern United States. Freezing temperatures are predicted from Texas across to Georgia. Cold weather warnings have also been issued for Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky. This unseasonable chill has prompted advice for gardeners to take measures to protect their plants from the frost.
Meteorologists are continuing to monitor the situation closely, warning of the potential for record low temperatures in the South alongside the intense snow impacting the Great Lakes states.
