Today's solar eclipse, with up to 96 per cent coverage in the Isles of Scilly, is the most significant in the UK since 1999. After this event, the next solar eclipse visible from the UK will occur on August 2, 2027, according to Royal Museums Greenwich.
Upcoming UK solar eclipses
On August 2, 2027, a partial solar eclipse will be visible in the UK, with totality also seen in parts of southern Spain, North Africa, and the Middle East. In the UK, it will begin around 9am BST, peak at around 10am, and end about an hour later. Londoners can expect roughly 42 per cent coverage, while southern and south-western areas may see slightly more.
The next solar eclipse with more than 90 per cent coverage won't happen until September 3, 2081, when up to 99 per cent of the Sun will be obscured. Cornwall and the south coast will again be the best viewing spots, according to Royal Museums Greenwich.
Total eclipse in 2090
The UK will have to wait until September 23, 2090, for its first total solar eclipse since 1999. The best viewing location will once again be the southern coast.
Royal Museums Greenwich states that other partial eclipses will occur in 2030 (50 per cent coverage), 2053 (40 per cent), 2066 (60 per cent), 2075 (70 per cent), 2082 (70 per cent), and 2088 (40 per cent), with "a handful" of minor eclipses in between.
