Newsboy's best bet on Wednesday is CALL MARGOT (4.15, NAP) in a tricky 5f handicap at Catterick. The three-year-old filly runs again seven days after finishing 13th of 19 in a sprint at the York Ebor Festival, and drops two classes as trainer Gemma Tutty seeks a first turf win for her.
Excuses for recent defeats
Although well beaten in her last three starts, there were excuses for each performance. At Hamilton in June she met traffic problems, at Goodwood the ground was too firm, and at York her jockey put up 2lb overweight.
Back in June the grey finished three quarters of a length second to the progressive Naana's Shadow at Epsom, and a repeat of that form on today's better ground can see her go close.
Newbury and Wolverhampton fancies
At Newbury, PRINCESS RASCAL (6.30, NB) is fancied to open her account for the season as she reverts to 1m. The Oliver Cole-trained filly has recorded both her wins over 1m2f but hasn't tried today's trip since her racecourse debut in April last year. Often ridden forward, jockey Kaiya Fraser can ride a positive race knowing there should be no stamina doubts.
Earlier, SOMERS ISLES (5.55) can build on a promising debut second at Newmarket for trainer Andrew Balding to win the 6f two-year-old maiden fillies race. The selection finished behind Godolphin filly Graceful Song, who ran in a Group 3 race next time, while the third Tie A Navyribbon has since opened her account.
At Wolverhampton, FAIR DINKUM (3.30) is on a fair mark in the 1m6f handicap if he can repeat his Salisbury near-miss three runs ago under Kieren O'Neill.
