Galloway Forest Park in Dumfries and Galloway is expected to offer the best views in the country, according to analysis by car rental firm SIXT.
Why Galloway Forest Park?
Experts at SIXT evaluated factors such as average August cloud cover, elevation, and percentage of solar obstruction to determine the top viewing sites. Galloway Forest Park stood out due to its low average cloud cover (49%), high elevation (843 meters above sea level), and a predicted solar obstruction of 91.7%, creating one of the deepest blackouts in Scotland. The park also offers "ample unobstructed western views," as noted by the experts.
The eclipse is expected to peak at 7:07 PM, giving viewers ample time to reach the park and enjoy the event. Galloway Forest Park is Britain's largest forest park, spanning over 300 square miles and containing 16 forests, with opportunities for hiking, cycling, and wildlife spotting.
Other UK Viewing Locations
Following Galloway Forest Park, the next best UK locations are Strumble Head in Pembrokeshire and Exmoor National Park in Devon and Somerset. While England and Wales may see greater eclipse coverage, two Scottish cities are also expected to experience significant blackouts: Glasgow with 91.4% coverage and Edinburgh with 90.7%.
