Keen rowers took to the River Tyne on Friday as part of the NE1 Newcastle Dragon Boat Race, with city centre businesses battling it out for victory as crowds cheered them on.
Corporate Day Kicks Off the Event
The annual event began with a corporate day of racing on Friday, setting the stage for the main public event on Saturday, which will feature racing all day.
Family activities will also be available, including arts and crafts, and children's attractions such as candyfloss stands, face-painting and bubble artists.
Teams Compete for Trophy and Charity
The teams that have signed up for the Boat Race will be competing in the championship races for a trophy, while also raising funds for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation cancer charity.
The colourful spectacle sees teams rowing dragon-head boats to the rhythm of a drum.
Record-Breaking Milestones Expected
Rachel Fenwick, head of marketing and events at NE1, said: "We’re already celebrating some record-breaking milestones with the fastest-selling event, the biggest number of boats and we hope, with the public’s support, the largest number of spectators the event has ever seen. We urge everyone to come along, cheer on the teams racing on the water, enjoy the entertainment on the Quayside and support the fundraising activities."
