Brazil's Alison dos Santos shattered the 400m hurdles world record at the Zurich Diamond League on Thursday, crossing the line in 46.29 seconds to take 0.41 seconds off the previous mark set by Norway's Karsten Warholm.
The 24-year-old, who had already won the Diamond League title in the event, produced a stunning final surge to beat a field that included world champion Rai Benjamin of the United States, who finished second in 46.68 seconds.
A record-breaking performance
Dos Santos's time eclipsed the 46.70 seconds Warholm ran at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, a mark that had stood as the world record for five years.
The Brazilian's victory in Zurich capped a remarkable season in which he had also won the world title in Eugene, Oregon, earlier this month.
What it means
With the record now in his name, Dos Santos becomes the first Brazilian to hold a world record in a track event since Joaquim Cruz set the 800m mark in 1984.
The Zurich meeting also saw Sweden's Armand Duplantis, the pole vault world record holder, clear 6.10 metres to win, although he fell short of his own world record of 6.21 metres set in March.
