UK Braces for Weekend Snowfall as Met Office Issues Multiple Weather Warnings
Subzero temperatures are set to bring glacial weather conditions across the United Kingdom this weekend, with the Met Office issuing multiple yellow weather warnings for snow and ice. An Arctic maritime air mass has plunged temperatures significantly, prompting the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) to issue a cold weather health alert that will remain in effect until Monday.
Weekend Weather Forecast and Snow Predictions
Wintry showers are anticipated to fall across various parts of the UK over the coming days. The Met Office has indicated that a band of rain and sleet will clear southwards across England and Wales during Friday evening and overnight, with snow expected in higher elevation areas. As skies clear, temperatures will fall below freezing, creating a risk of ice forming on untreated surfaces.
On Saturday morning, bitingly cold temperatures will persist, with more snow forecast across wide swathes of the UK, particularly on higher ground, until Sunday morning. Across the Scottish hills, up to 15 centimetres of snow could accumulate overnight on Saturday.
Detailed Snow Accumulation and Hazard Warnings
The Met Office provided specific details regarding the expected snowfall: "Outbreaks of rain spreading eastwards on Saturday night will fall as snow initially, even to low levels for a time, before becoming confined to higher ground as milder air arrives from the west."
Temporary snow accumulations of 1-3 centimetres are possible at low levels, with 3-7 centimetres likely above approximately 150 metres elevation, and potentially 10-15 centimetres above 400 metres. Areas sheltered to the north of high ground may experience very little snow. Ice will pose an additional hazard, particularly across northeast England and parts of Scotland, where precipitation could fall on frozen ground, leading to very slippery conditions.
Regional Weather Patterns and Outlook
Tonight, patchy rain and snow will clear from southern England overnight. Elsewhere, conditions will be mostly clear, with a few wintry showers in the north and east. A widespread frost is expected, accompanied by icy patches, with winds easing.
Saturday will begin with a frosty and locally icy start, but the day will be largely dry with plenty of sunshine and light winds. However, cloud and rain will arrive in the west later, with winds freshening.
The outlook for Sunday to Tuesday includes wind and rain, with some snow clearing to brighter skies and showers on Sunday. Conditions will turn milder, with sunshine, showers, and brisk winds on Monday. Rain is expected to arrive in the south on Tuesday.
This weekend's weather event follows a pattern of cold snaps, with the Met Office emphasising the importance of staying informed and taking precautions against the hazardous conditions.
