UK Snow Maps Forecast Blizzard Conditions for 60% of Nation Next Week

According to the latest weather maps, approximately 60 per cent of the United Kingdom could be blanketed by snow and subjected to blustery conditions next week. The forecasts, based on data from WXCharts using MetDesk information, suggest a significant wintry outbreak is on the horizon.

Widespread Snowfall Predicted for Key Regions

Large swathes of Scotland, Wales, northern England, and the Midlands are expected to face snowy conditions on Wednesday, February 25. Atlantic weather systems pushing in from the west are likely to bring snow overnight into Wednesday morning, with much of the country anticipated to see snow or ice by noon.

The map for 12pm indicates the heaviest snowfall will occur across northeast Scotland, impacting cities such as Aberdeen, Dundee, and Glasgow with snow showers. Further south, Newcastle upon Tyne and Manchester are set to experience winds and lighter snow, while Stoke-on-Trent could see patchy snow showers.

Met Office Issues Changeable Weather Warning

In its long-range forecast covering Monday, February 23, to Wednesday, March 4, the Met Office describes the start of the period as "quite changeable" due to Atlantic frontal systems tracking near or across the UK. These systems are expected to bring spells of rain or showers, typically heaviest and most frequent over western areas, interspersed with drier periods.

The Met Office further states: "Some spells of strong winds will be possible at times too, again more especially in western parts. With a flow generally from the North Atlantic, temperatures will likely be near or above average for much of this period, though a trend towards something a little cooler is possible for a time around the change of the month."

Regional Variations and Afternoon Forecast

Northern Ireland, including Belfast, is set for a mix of wintry showers, with some snow possible, but generally lighter and less widespread than in Scotland. By 3pm, snow is expected to continue across northeast Scotland, especially over higher ground around Aberdeen and Dundee.

Lighter, patchy snow showers could linger across parts of central and western Scotland and northern England, particularly over the Pennines. In other areas, snow could turn to spells of rain, while the south is expected to remain mostly dry with no snow.

Current Weather Warnings and Outlook

A yellow snow warning remains in place for much of Wales and parts of central England and the southern Pennines until 6am on Thursday. An ice warning covering much of Wales and parts of the West Midlands will remain in force until 10am. Additionally, a rain warning is in effect in parts of South West England and London & South East England until 8am.

There are currently no weather warnings in place for Friday. The Met Office's outlook for Friday to Sunday notes: "Overnight frost clearing on Friday. Wet and windy weather moving east, then brighter and showery later. Much milder this weekend, but with further wet and windy weather at times."

Tomorrow (Thursday) is expected to be drier and less windy for most, with rain and hill snow in the south easing and becoming confined to eastern England, though some further showers are possible in the west.
