Hot Air Balloon Makes Emergency Landing in California Couple's Backyard

A California couple experienced an astonishing surprise on Saturday morning when a hot air balloon carrying more than a dozen passengers made an unexpected emergency landing directly in their backyard. The incident occurred in Temecula, California, around 8:30 a.m., leaving residents and passengers alike in a state of shock and relief.

A Sudden Knock on the Door

Hunter Perrin was relaxing at home, watching television, when a neighbor urgently knocked on his door. "I go and answer the door. This guy's like, 'They just landed in your backyard!' And I'm like, 'What?!'" Hunter recounted to local news outlet KABC. His wife, Jenna, was in another room practicing yoga at the time, and both immediately rushed outside to investigate the commotion.

Upon opening their sliding glass door, they were met with an unbelievable sight: a basket filled with 13 people standing calmly in their backyard. Hunter praised the pilot's skill, noting, "The pilot, he was masterful. He got it right down inside, like directly onto the backyard, where there was nothing. The balloon didn't catch on anything. No one was injured."

Masterful Maneuvering Avoids Disaster

Surveillance footage from the scene later revealed the precision of the landing. The pilot expertly steered the basket onto the lawn, narrowly avoiding a fence and neighboring trees by positioning it between the couple's raised garden and patio. Audio from the balloon captured the tension, with one passenger exclaiming, "No, no, no not into the fence," while another screamed, "We're in somebody's backyard."

By the time Hunter and Jenna reached their yard, they found the passengers waving back at them from the basket. The pilot explained that he was forced to make the emergency landing because the wind had died down and the balloon was almost out of fuel. "He was trying to get us to the street, but we couldn't get to the street in time, so we landed in the people's backyard safe and sound, like no one's hurt, everyone's great," said passenger Brianna Avalos, who was celebrating her 10th wedding anniversary with her husband on the ride.

Neighborhood Spectacle and Safe Resolution

The landing quickly turned into a local spectacle. One resident told KTLA they were awoken by neighbors screaming, and soon, people lined the streets to watch as the pilot attempted to get the balloon back into the air. "All the neighbors came out. They were looking at our house because you could see the balloon so clearly over the house," Hunter said, with some comparing their suburban home to the house in the Pixar film 'Up!'

With careful maneuvering, the pilot and bystanders managed to redirect the balloon. Footage showed residents grabbing a drop line tethered to the basket, cheering and clapping as it passed over the house. Eventually, more propane was delivered, allowing the pilot to move the balloon onto the street for more space. Crews then deflated the balloon and asked residents to move their vehicles as it was secured.

After about two hours, the balloon was successfully placed on a transport truck, according to NBC Los Angeles. One long-time neighborhood resident noted that while hot air balloons are common in the area, often soaring into wine country, she had never witnessed such an emergency landing.

Reflecting on the surreal event, Hunter expressed relief, saying, "We're just happy that everyone was safe. It's just such a whimsical story." The incident ended without injuries, leaving the couple and their community with a memorable tale of unexpected backyard visitors.
