A 42-year-old British woman has tragically lost her life in a mountain accident in northern Spain, authorities have confirmed. The incident occurred on Saturday evening as she was descending the Balaitus Peak, a famous granite massif in the Pyrenees that straddles the border between Spain and France.
The woman, who was born in the UK but resided in Finland, was crossing a renowned climbing route known as the Great Diagonal when she fell approximately 500 metres (1,650 feet). Her 53-year-old partner, whose nationality has not been disclosed, witnessed the fall but was unharmed. The accident took place in the municipality of Salient de Gallego, in the province of Huesca.
A spokesman for the Civil Guard stated: 'An investigation is ongoing and a report drafted by officers will be sent to a local investigating court along with the post-mortem results. At this stage, the woman's death is being treated as a tragic accident resulting from a fall.'
The alarm was raised around 7:20 pm on Saturday, prompting a response from the Civil Guard's specialist mountain search and rescue unit, Greim. A helicopter was dispatched to the area, which recovered the woman's body and transported it to a nearby heliport. From there, it was taken to Zaragoza's Forensic Medicine Institute for a post-mortem examination. It remains unclear whether the autopsy has already been conducted.
A well-placed source indicated that weather conditions in the area on Saturday had been favourable, but the woman is believed to have slipped on a snow-covered section while descending the mountain. The Balaitus Peak, which reaches an elevation of 3,144 metres (10,277 feet), is a popular destination for climbers and marks the starting point of the High Pyrenees, featuring seven distinct ridges.
This incident follows the death of a 61-year-old British hiker last month, who was found dead after going missing in Spain's Picos de Europa mountain range amid bad weather. The hiker had called emergency services around 7 pm on May 14, reporting that he was 'lost and exhausted'. A search operation involving a helicopter was launched, and his body was discovered on May 16.
