Scorching high temperatures that have gripped the UK over the past month are expected to come to an abrupt end, with weather maps showing a dramatic cold snap that could see temperatures fall as low as 5°C in parts of Scotland. According to WXCharts maps for July 30, early morning temperatures across the UK will range between 5°C and 15°C, a stark contrast to the recent heatwaves and extreme heat that have persisted day and night.
Scotland to Bear the Brunt of the Cold
The maps reveal a blue hue over Scotland, indicating the coldest conditions. The Highlands are forecast to be the coldest area, with temperatures dropping below 7°C. A total of 14 counties are predicted to see temperatures of 7°C or lower on July 30, including Aberdeenshire, Angus, Argyll and Bute, East Ayrshire, Highland, Moray, Na h-Eileanan Siar, Orkney Islands, Perth and Kinross, Scottish Borders, Shetland Islands, South Ayrshire, Stirling, and West Dunbartonshire.
Northern England will also experience relatively cold weather, though temperatures will be slightly above average for Scotland. Regions such as Cumbria, Northumberland, Yorkshire, and Manchester are expected to see temperatures between 8°C and 10°C.
Met Office Forecast: Changeable Weather Ahead
The Met Office's long-range forecast for July 25 to August 2 describes the period as "largely changeable," with many parts of the UK likely to see rain at times. The forecast states: "This period looks like being largely changeable, with many parts likely to see some rain at times. Rain will spread South-east across most, if not all, parts of the UK through this weekend, with some showers following."
The Met Office adds: "Further bands of rain look likely to spread southeast next week, interspersed with sunny spells and some showers. Confidence becomes lower as we approach the turn of the month, but there are hints that high pressure could return for a time, which would mean dry conditions resuming, especially in the south."
Winds and Temperature Outlook
Winds are expected to be mostly light or moderate, but occasionally fresh or strong around some coasts, mainly in the north. Temperatures will be near or above normal, with the warmest conditions in the south. The Met Office notes that temperatures could "become very warm again by the start of August."
By the evening of July 30, warm weather is forecast to dominate the south and east of England, providing a contrast to the chilly start to the day in northern regions.
