The North East weekend forecast is comfortably mild, while the rest of the UK bakes. The region will see mainly dry but cloudy conditions, with the odd spot of early light rain possible across northwestern hills, according to the Met Office. The best of any sunny spells will be in the south and east at first, but some brighter spells are possible for all throughout.
Friday and Saturday outlook
Friday evening is expected to be dry before thicker cloud spreads south, possibly bringing brief light rain. Saturday, which sees Newcastle's Pride march, will have variable cloud cover but also some sunny spells, especially later in the day. The odd light shower is possible, but most parts stay dry, with a maximum temperature of 21°C.
Sunday rain and next week
Sunday brings sunny spells mixing with showers, becoming heavy at times. Rain is expected from around 11am until 8pm, then sweeping south across the East Coast. The start of next week will be drier, cloudier and breezier, with no further major rain forecast by the Met Office so far.
While the North East experiences traditional British summer weather, yellow heat health alerts are in place from 9am Friday to 9am Sunday for the East Midlands, East of England, London, South East, South West and West Midlands. Temperatures there are forecast to reach mid to high 20s, with a high of 30°C possible, as much of the country continues a prolonged dry, warm period.
