Thunderstorms struck across the North East on Friday morning following a Met Office warning. The weather experts sent out an alert, urging people to take care as very warm weather continues. The thunderstorm alert is in place until 10am on Friday, June 26. Forecasters say the weather will feel humid and temperatures could reach 27°C.
Met Office Warning Details
The Met Office said: Thunderstorms are expected to move northeastwards across parts of England and Wales during the early hours of Friday, clearing during Friday morning. Whilst many areas will miss them, thunderstorms may produce sudden, gusty winds with 50 to 60 mph possible, particularly in the south and west of the warning area. Frequent lightning, hail and heavy rain (possibly 15-20 mm in an hour) are additional hazards.
Thunder and Lightning Reports
Thunder and lightning occurred in several areas on Friday morning. People in coastal locations, including Whitley Bay and Tynemouth, felt the rumbles of thunder at around 7.30am. In some locations, there were heavy showers. A clip shared by reporter Sonia Sharma showed dark clouds over Whitley Bay with rumbles of thunder building up.
Yellow Warning in Effect
The Met Office issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms in the North East, in effect from midnight until 10am today. The alert states: Many areas missing the worst, but thunderstorms could bring disruption in places during Thursday night and into Friday morning.
