A suspected burglar was pinned down by police officers in a Morrisons supermarket in Newport following a spate of break-ins at the store. The arrest took place in the early hours of Wednesday, June 24, at the Morrisons branch on Orb Drive in Lliswerry.
Police operation leads to arrest
At approximately 3:15am, officers conducting a targeted operation heard banging and the sound of glass shattering from inside the store. They swiftly entered and apprehended a man found in the alcohol aisle. The 42-year-old suspect, from Newport, was arrested on suspicion of burglary and remains in police custody.
Partnership working to tackle crime
The arrest was the result of close collaboration between Newport's neighbourhood policing team and Morrisons management after a series of burglaries at the Lliswerry branch. Inspector Roland Giles highlighted the importance of partnership working: "Every bit of information helps inform operations like last night's. Partnership working is essential, and we've been working closely with stores across Newport to first offer crime prevention advice, strengthen security and, at times when we have received reports of break-ins, respond robustly to make arrests."
Community reassurance
Inspector Giles added: "Officers make use of an array of tactics to identify suspects and then detain them." He urged the public to report concerns: "If you have any concerns about burglary or theft offences in your area, then please take the time to talk to our officers." The operation underscores police efforts to address retail crime in Newport.
