The Met Office has issued a red alert for very high pollen levels across Greater Manchester and north west England on Wednesday (July 15) and Thursday (July 16) this week, as the UK heatwave continues. The alert is part of the Met Office's five-day pollen forecast, which warns hay fever sufferers of when symptoms are likely to be most severe.
Manchester experienced a cooler day on Monday (July 14) with highs of 24°C, which the Met Office described as a 'brief respite' before temperatures climbed again to 27°C on Tuesday. The heat is set to persist, with UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) heat-health alerts still in place. Temperatures are expected to peak on Wednesday, possibly reaching 33°C in parts of southern-central England, according to Met Office spokesman Stephen Dixon.
Wildfires and Heatwave Conditions
As of Monday afternoon, wildfires were burning in 19 locations across England and Wales, including moorlands near Dovestone Reservoir in Saddleworth, where a wildfire has been raging for the third day. The Met Office has warned that the dry conditions and lack of rainfall are contributing to the fire risk. Dixon noted that high pressure is dominating the UK's weather, leading to clear skies and minimal precipitation for many areas.
Dixon added that a slight dip in temperatures is expected by the weekend, with peak temperatures likely in the mid-to-high 20s Celsius. This is due to a northerly influence that will lower temperatures slightly, though they will remain above average and pleasant for most.
Hay Fever Red Alert Details
Hay fever affects more than ten million people in the UK and is an allergic reaction to pollen grains released during the pollen season, which typically runs from March to November. The Met Office issues a five-day pollen forecast with alert levels ranging from low (green) to very high (red). Symptoms of hay fever include congestion, sneezing, itchy eyes, headaches, and hives.
The red alert for north west England, including Greater Manchester, is in effect on Wednesday and Thursday. Other regions, including Northern Ireland, Wales, and south west England, are also under red alerts for the same days. The rest of the UK is under amber (high) or yellow (medium) pollen warnings throughout the week.
Advice for Hay Fever Sufferers
The Met Office advises hay fever sufferers to take antihistamines before going outside, remove outdoor clothing upon returning indoors, and wash hands and face to minimize exposure to pollen particles. The UKHSA heat-health alerts remain in place, urging people to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged sun exposure during peak temperatures.
