Two Manchester bars have announced a major rule change for their screening of England's World Cup semi-final against Argentina on Wednesday evening (July 15). Sadler's Cat and New Century, both located in the NOMA neighbourhood near Victoria Station, will move their screenings indoors after overcrowding issues during England's quarter-final victory over Norway.
Overcrowding Prompts Safety Measures
On Saturday night (July 11), England beat Norway 2-1 in the quarter-finals, with goals from Jude Bellingham. Up to 13,000 fans gathered at Freight Island and Mayfield Depot alone to watch the match. However, at Sadler's Cat, the outdoor Yard area saw 'excessive numbers of people crowding', prompting landlords to demand a safer setup.
In an Instagram post, Sadler's Cat explained: 'We have decided the safest option for Wednesday's semi final is for inside seating only. We're really sorry for any inconvenience caused. After exploring every possible option, this is our only possible route for Wednesday with your safety being our main priority.' The pub will operate on a limited capacity with walk-ins only.
New Century Moves Screening Indoors
New Century also issued an update, stating: 'If you were there at the weekend, the Yard was one of the best experiences we've ever put on and we thank you all for coming. However, after discussions with our landlord and surrounding neighbours, we have decided the safest option for Wednesday's semi-final is to move the screening inside.' All yard tickets will be transferred to the Kitchen with reserved tables, and additional screens will be added. Walk-in space will be very limited.
The semi-final kicks off at 8pm, though there are concerns about potential delays due to weather forecasts in Atlanta. England will face Argentina for a spot in the final against either France or Spain on Sunday.
