The Met Office has released weather maps showing heavy rain will batter 17 parts of the UK this week as a weather front moves in from the Atlantic, ending the blistering heatwave.
Scotland and Northern Ireland to be Drenched on Friday
Scotland will be drenched on Friday, with rain building from 10am and intensifying in the northwest at 7pm to heavy showers, according to Met Office weather maps. The rain will stretch down to Edinburgh, covering the Highlands to the west and Aberdeen in the east, while a flash of rain will also cut through the centre of Northern Ireland. The rest of the UK is forecast dry weather.
By 10pm on Friday, the heavy rain will have moved across Scotland to target the east coast of Aberdeenshire, leaving behind scattered heavy rain in the northwest.
Rain Continues into Saturday
The rain continues into Saturday, with a huge band of rain moving over the Atlantic with heavy showers. Overnight, the weather front moves further south down to Newcastle with heavy patches again over the Highlands.
Met Office Forecast for Wednesday to Friday
The Met Office forecast for Wednesday to Friday said: "Staying settled through the week with patchy cloud and the odd shower in the north. Staying warm to very warm with temperatures in the mid to high 20s."
It ends a relatively dry week across the UK, when the Met Office has forecast sunny spells, cloud and just a patch of drizzle around the coast.
This week will be fresher than the heatwave conditions the UK has experienced over the past couple of months, with temperatures regularly sitting in the mid 30s.
Climate Context
Mike Kendon at the Met Office said "what we used to think of as extreme, we increasingly consider as normal" in the latest edition of the State of the UK Climate report.
