A 91-foot superyacht named Da Vinci caught fire and sank off the coast of Formentera, a popular holiday destination near Ibiza, on Monday morning. The blaze broke out around 11.20am, sending thick black smoke into the sky before the vessel went under.
Spanish maritime rescue services evacuated all seven people on board, including four passengers, two crew members and the captain. They were taken to safety in good condition, though efforts to save the yacht failed despite assistance from firefighters.
The fire is believed to have started in the engine room. The yacht, built by Spanish yard Astondoa as part of its 95 GLX series, was equipped with a wet bar, barbecue and dining table. It sank 7.3 miles southwest of Punta Gavina, Formentera.
A ferry, Ramon Llull, was first on the scene after spotting the fire while en route from La Savina to Denia. It stood by until a rescue vessel arrived. Salvamento Marítimo confirmed the yacht sank and that a vessel remains in the area to clear debris.
