Weather forecasting models indicate that daytime temperatures could soon fall to -2C in parts of the UK, with millions of Brits potentially facing freezing conditions.
The Met Office has said "more unsettled or changeable conditions" are on the cards as the country heads towards November, with foggy periods maintaining cold temperatures.
Temperature anomaly maps show cold spell
Temperature anomaly maps for November 12 and November 13 show the UK shaded in areas of deep blue, indicating that temperatures will remain well below the seasonal average.
The GFS model shows minimum possible temperatures reaching -2C in northern Scotland at midday on November 12, with -1C in northern England, 3C in the Midlands and just 5C in the south-east.
By 6pm, the data shows temperatures remaining much the same across England and Scotland. South Wales, the south-west of England and Northern Ireland are expected to be the warmest areas, although the mercury will struggle to rise into the double digits.
Colder conditions expected on November 13
The following day looks set to be even colder, with minimum possible temperatures dropping below 0C across Scotland, northern and central England, and most of Wales at midday.
By 6pm, the GFS model suggests temperatures will have improved somewhat in England and Wales, although much of Scotland could still remain at 0C or below. Again, the south-west of England and Northern Ireland are expected to be the warmest areas.
In total, the GFS model maps suggest 56 counties could see daytime temperatures at 0C or below across these two days. They are all in Scotland, Wales or England.

BBC Weather outlook
BBC Weather says wet and windy conditions could arrive around the middle of November. Its forecast for November 9 to 22 states: "Signs are that high pressure could loosen its hold and recede from the UK, allowing Atlantic low pressure systems to approach the country.
"This change in pattern would mean a wetter and windier trend for the UK, with most areas probably seeing precipitation amounts close to or even above average as weather systems bring occasional spells of wet and windy weather. Northern and western regions may see more rain than the south and east, thanks to the possible proximity of high pressure over mainland Europe."
