The Met Office forecasts "wintry showers" after November 10 because a cold snap looms. Chances of snow and sleet are likely in some regions across several days in the middle of this month, it is said.
A band of low pressure will move northwards across the country from the Atlantic on Wednesday, and it is set to linger for some time. During this time frame, the Met Office states, Brits can expect "a few wintry showers are likely in the far north, but otherwise this will mean a spell of fine and dry weather developing for most areas."
Cold Snap Brings Snow Risk
Those areas in the north include parts of Scotland and, potentially, higher ground across Cumbria, Northumberland and County Durham. This, though, is not unusual for these regions as, in November 2025, −12.6C was recorded by the Met Office in Tomintoul, Moray. The first snowfall last winter was recorded on November 18, 2025.
Temperatures are poised to plunge to -7C in the coming week or so, which could lead to optimum conditions for the first snowfall of this winter. Weather maps, which the Mirror published this week, show the places believed to be the coldest in the UK later this month — and these include north Wales and parts of the northwest of England.
Long-Range Forecast Details
In its long-range forecast spanning Wednesday November 11 to Saturday December 5, the Met Office states that at the beginning of the period, "outbreaks of rain across the south of the UK will clear away as clearer conditions spread from the north".
The wintry showers are expected in this period, and the national weather service has said this term typically refers to rainfall that may contain an element of sleet, snow and potentially hail. The term can also be applied more broadly when referring to a wide area where separate pockets of snow and sleet might occur.
Fog Warning and December Outlook
The Express reports conditions are likely to become drier — and a touch warmer — at the start of December. This would reflect what the UK saw in general at the start of November when, at times, the mercury was above average for the time of the year.
Fog has, though, delivered a gloomy start to the weekend. A weather warning for fog remains in place for large parts of the Southeast of England and the East of England, including all of Greater London.
