Katy Perry suggested her ex-husband Russell Brand should be in jail during a concert in July, months before a jury found him guilty of rape and sexual assault.
Perry made the remark while playing an interactive game with fans on the first night of her Out of Office UK tour at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire. The singer, who was married to Brand for 14 months from October 2010, was reflecting on her love life during the headline set.
Joke About Ex-Husband
During the game, fans' faces were broadcast on a giant laptop and Perry asked them to perform various poses. One fan was asked to "pose like you've just seen your ex", to which Perry joked through the microphone: "I hope my ex isn't here, he should be in jail," the Mirror reports.
At the time of the performance, Brand was still awaiting trial on seven charges, including three counts of rape, one of indecent assault and three charges of sexual assault.
Trial Details
Jurors in the Brand trial were blocked from hearing about Perry after the prosecution had wanted to mention their marriage. Ahead of the trial, prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones KC said in legal submissions: "The prosecution recognise that matters post 2009 involving his [Brand's] relationship with Katy Perry may be sensitive, as may his previous faiths, and we are content to remove these from the opening."
On Thursday, a jury found Brand guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault. He was cleared of two further charges of rape and one allegation of attempted indecent assault.
Sentencing Ahead
Brand now faces the prospect of a lengthy prison term when he is sentenced on Monday next week, just over three years after first being exposed as a rapist and sexual predator.
