Leeds denied penalty in Spurs clash as VAR sparks fury

Leeds United's Premier League clash with Tottenham Hotspur at Elland Road was overshadowed by VAR controversy in the opening minutes on Saturday lunchtime, after home fans were convinced they should have been awarded a penalty.

The incident occurred during a period of Leeds pressure, as Matheus Fernandes stretched out his arm while dealing with a cross. The ball appeared to bounce off his arm and away from danger, but referee John Brooks waved away the appeals for a spot-kick.

VAR confirms on-field decision

VAR official Tony Harrington also saw no issue with the clearance, and the decision was upheld after a check. The Premier League's Match Centre account explained on X: "The referee's call of no penalty to Leeds United was checked and confirmed by VAR – with it deemed that Fernandes did not commit a handball offence."

The account added: "VAR: 'Confirming the on-field decision of play on. The ball strikes the very top of the arm as he is leaning – in the green zone'." A diagram was posted to illustrate what is and is not considered a handball.

Leeds fans react angrily

The decision left Leeds supporters furious, with one posting: "Making it up as they go along - what's the green zone?" Another wrote: "This is a blatant handball! What on earth are the referee and VAR doing this season."

A third fan added: "Leeds United has been robbed, clear handball, stonewall penalty, daylight robbery!" while another commented: "I'm no expert on handball in football. If that wasn't a handball from M. Fernandes, then let's pack VAR in. And don't give me the bellow the sleeve rubbish...."

The match continued with Spurs looking to extend their recent run of form in the midday kick-off.
