Temperatures in London are forecast to reach 34C on Wednesday, as the capital endures what BBC Weather forecaster Chris Fawkes describes as an 'incredibly long-lived' heatwave. After reaching 34C on Monday and dipping to 32C on Tuesday, the mercury is expected to climb again, matching the peak of June's record-breaking hot spell.
Amber Health Warning in Force
A week-long amber warning from health officials remains in place for parts of the UK, including London. The warning indicates that high temperatures could pose a greater risk to life for vulnerable individuals, such as the elderly or those with pre-existing health conditions.
Travel Disruption and Rail Warnings
The heatwave raises the threat of further travel disruption for Londoners. During June's record hot weather, 'do not travel' warnings were issued on railways, leading to delays and cancellations for commuter services. Similar issues could arise as temperatures soar again.
Hosepipe Ban Speculation
The prolonged heatwave has also increased speculation about a potential hosepipe ban for London this summer. One water company has already urged residents in the capital not to waste supplies. Outside London, Southern Water has announced a hosepipe ban starting at 12:01am on July 10 in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. South East Water’s temporary hosepipe ban for people in Kent came into force on Friday.
Third Heatwave of the Year
This is the third heatwave of the year. In June, a sweltering heatwave prompted the Met Office to issue a rare red warning. The UK set a provisional June temperature record of 37.7C in Lingwood, Norfolk, according to the Met Office.
