The Met Office has issued a severe amber rain warning for parts of Wales, indicating a potential danger to life from flooding. The alert, active from 3am until 9pm on Monday 15 December 2025, warns that homes and businesses are likely to be flooded and some communities could become cut off.
Widespread Weather Warnings Across the UK
Alongside the amber alert for south and south-west Wales, several yellow rain warnings are in place across large swathes of the country. These cover parts of north-east, north-west and south-west England, the East Midlands, the West Midlands, and other areas of Wales.
The Met Office forecasts between 50mm and 80mm of rain widely in the amber zone, with nearly 100mm possible in some locations. "Given the recent wet weather and saturated ground, the likelihood of impacts is higher," the forecaster stated.
Immediate Risks and Official Advice
The Environment Agency has escalated its alerts, issuing seven flood warnings where flooding is expected, including in the Lake District, alongside 79 alerts where flooding is possible.
The Met Office's amber warning is stark: "Fast-flowing or deep floodwater is likely, causing danger to life." It also warns of probable power cuts and loss of services. Officials urge the public to prepare to avoid travelling by road during dangerous conditions and to drive with extreme caution if journeys are essential.
Travel Chaos and Further Outlook
RAC breakdown spokeswoman Alice Simpson highlighted the particular risk on pre-Christmas roads: "Although millions more people will be on the roads this week, the safety guidance remains the same: slow down, leave extra stopping distance and don’t risk driving through standing water."
Looking ahead, Met Office spokesman Stephen Dixon said the rain will ease on Tuesday, bringing clearer skies. However, more wet and windy weather is expected from Wednesday, spreading across the UK and topping up rainfall totals in sensitive areas like south Wales and south-west England. Unsettled conditions are likely to continue into the weekend.
