A 15-year-old boy has died after getting into difficulty in the sea near Aberavon Beach in Port Talbot, South Wales. The teenager, identified as David Ejimofor, was pulled from the water but could not be saved despite efforts from members of the public and emergency services.
Police were called to the scene at around 7.10pm on Monday, June 19, prompting a large rescue operation involving the coastguard, Welsh Ambulance Service, and Wales Air Ambulance. The boy was pronounced dead shortly after being brought ashore.
Chief Inspector Richard Haines of South Wales Police said in a statement: 'A 15-year-old boy was located and despite the best efforts of members of the public and emergency services he sadly passed away.' He appealed for anyone with information to contact police quoting reference 2300202601.
Tributes have been paid to David, a pupil at St Joseph's School in Aberavon. Archbishop Mark of the Archdiocese of Cardiff said on social media: 'So saddened to hear of the tragic death of David Ejimofor... Promised his family I would ask the Catholics of S Wales to pray for them and their beloved son. May he rest in peace and Rise in Glory.'
Local councillor Matthew Crowley expressed his condolences, saying: 'First and foremost, my thoughts are with the person affected, and their family as well.' The incident is under investigation, and police have urged the public to avoid speculation.
