Scotland's Best Seaside Towns Named: St Andrews Tops List with 81% Score

Consumer champion Which? has revealed its ranking of the best seaside towns in Scotland, with St Andrews taking the top spot with an impressive 81 per cent score. The Fife town is celebrated for its sweeping West Sands beach, historic cobbled streets, and world-famous golf links, offering a blend of outdoor activities and cultural attractions.

Top-Ranked Towns

In second place is Crail, another Fife favourite, scoring 80 per cent. This picturesque fishing village in the East Neuk features a working harbour, whitewashed cottages, and scenic coastal paths, making it ideal for walkers and day-trippers. North Berwick and Plockton both scored 77 per cent, followed by Dornoch and Tobermory at 75 per cent.

The rankings are based on criteria including average hotel price, beach quality, seafront and pier, food and drink, tourist attractions, scenery, shopping, peace and quiet, parking, and value for money.

St Andrews: More Than Golf

While St Andrews is globally known as the home of golf, visitors can explore independent shops and cafes, or visit the stunning West Sands beach, famous from the opening scene of Chariots of Fire. The town also boasts several Michelin Guide restaurants and local favourites like Fisher & Donaldson bakery and Jannettas Gelateria, which often has queues for its famous ice cream.

Lower-Ranked Destinations

At the other end of the list, Portree on the Isle of Skye scored 63 per cent, while Ayr placed last with 59 per cent. Despite lower scores, both remain popular. Portree is one of Scotland's most photographed coastal destinations, with a colourful waterfront and busy harbour, while Ayr offers a wide sandy beach along the Firth of Clyde with views of the Isle of Arran, plus a traditional promenade and links to Robert Burns.
