A man has died after attempting to rescue two family members from the sea at Tregirls Beach in Padstow, Cornwall. Police were called at around 3:50pm on Bank Holiday Monday (May 25) following reports of a man suffering a cardiac arrest in the water.
The man, a local in his 60s, entered the sea to help two family members who were struggling. While the family members were brought to safety by members of the public, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.
Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed the death is not being treated as suspicious, and a file will be prepared for HM Coroner. Emergency services, including the RNLI, attended the scene.
The incident occurred during a period of record-breaking heat in the UK. Monday saw the warmest May night on record, with temperatures not falling below 21.3°C at Kenley Airfield, south London. Kew Gardens in south-west London recorded a provisional all-time hottest spring temperature of 34.8°C.
In a separate incident, a 13-year-old boy died after getting into difficulty in a West Yorkshire reservoir. The AA also warned that vehicle interiors can reach 60°C on a 27°C day, urging caution for vulnerable groups such as older adults.
