A ferry that was reported missing in the eastern Mediterranean has been found capsized off the coast of Cyprus, with no survivors located, according to the Cypriot joint rescue coordination centre.
Search and Discovery
The vessel, which had been carrying passengers and crew, was discovered overturned approximately 30 nautical miles south of the port of Larnaca. The alarm was raised after the ferry failed to arrive at its scheduled destination, prompting a large-scale search operation involving aircraft and ships from Cyprus and nearby countries.
Rescue teams reported finding debris and an empty life raft near the capsized vessel, but no signs of the 14 people believed to have been on board. The nationalities of those missing have not yet been confirmed.
Ongoing Efforts
Search efforts are continuing, with authorities saying they are treating the incident as a rescue operation rather than a recovery mission. Weather conditions in the area have been described as calm, which may aid the ongoing search.
The cause of the capsizing remains under investigation, and no distress signal was received from the ferry before it went missing, the rescue coordination centre added.
