A man required hospital treatment after a family of three was forced to abandon their kayak as it began to sink at Cullercoats Bay on Friday evening. The incident, which occurred around 6:11pm, prompted a coordinated response from multiple coastal rescue teams.
Rescue Response
Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade (TVLB), Blyth Coastguard Rescue Team, and Cullercoats RNLI were dispatched to the scene following reports of a sinking vessel with a family aboard. Five TVLB members attended. Upon arrival, responders found that the family had already made it to shore, but one individual required further medical attention.
In a statement, TVLB officials said: "HM Coastguard tasked the Brigade, Blyth Coastguard Rescue Team & Cullercoats RNLI after a report of a sinking vessel with a family aboard at Cullercoats Bay. Brigade members arrived on scene to find that the family was ashore and then worked with colleagues in other services to provide casualty care."
Casualty Details
According to the brigade, one casualty—a man—was taken to hospital for further care, while the other two family members were able to make their own way home. It is believed that the man had entered the water, causing the kayak to become unstable and capsize. All three managed to swim ashore, but the man later displayed symptoms that warranted medical attention.

The incident comes amid heightened awareness of open water dangers, particularly during the current heatwave. The North East Ambulance Service has launched its first-ever summer campaign warning of hot weather risks, while NHS officials note that the combination of heat and the football World Cup has led to the health service's busiest summer on record.
